Systematic Desensitization
Systematic Desensitization
A method of gradually reducing fear by imagining fearful stimuli while in a relaxed state, step by step.
Details
Systematic Desensitization is a technique developed by Joseph Wolpe that reduces fear by pairing anxiety-provoking stimuli with a relaxation response.
An anxiety hierarchy is created (from least to most anxiety-provoking), and while maintaining a relaxed state, each item is imagined or encountered one by one.
Because anxiety and relaxation are difficult to experience at the same time, fear gradually fades when exposure happens alongside relaxation. — Mindy
💡 Real-Life Example
Progressing through: viewing a photo of a spider while relaxed → watching a video of a spider → encountering a real spider.
