Somatic Experiencing
A body-oriented trauma therapy that helps release survival energy stored in the nervous system by gently tuning into physical sensations.

What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a body-centered approach to healing trauma. Rather than focusing only on thoughts and memories, SE recognizes that trauma lives in the body — as unresolved survival energy trapped in the nervous system.
How It Works
When we face overwhelming situations, the nervous system activates fight, flight, or freeze responses. If that energy isn't fully discharged, it can linger as chronic tension, anxiety, hypervigilance, or dissociation. SE uses gentle awareness of bodily sensations to help this energy release naturally and safely — the way animals in the wild shake off stress after a threat passes.
In Daily Life
You might notice SE principles at work when you feel a sudden shiver after a stressful moment passes, or when a deep sigh releases tension you didn't realize you were holding. Practitioners help clients slowly pendulate between comfortable and uncomfortable sensations, gradually expanding the nervous system's window of tolerance.
Why It Matters
Remember, healing doesn't have to be overwhelming. Mindy is here to remind you that your body has always been trying to protect you — and with patience, it can learn to feel safe again. 💚
💡 Real-Life Example
After a car accident, someone notices their heart racing every time they get into a vehicle; SE helps them safely discharge the frozen survival energy still held in their body.
