Somatic Complaints
Somatic Complaints
Somatic complaints occur when psychological distress expresses itself through physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, and fatigue. The body essentially 'speaks' what the mind finds difficult to put into words.

What Are Somatic Complaints?
Somatic complaints refer to the repeated experience and reporting of physical symptoms for which it is difficult to find a clear medical cause. They can appear in many forms — headaches, stomachaches, muscle pain, dizziness, fatigue, indigestion, and more. Often, psychological stress or emotional difficulties are being expressed through the body.
The Connection Between Mind and Body
Our minds and bodies are deeply connected. When emotions like stress, anxiety, depression, or anger are hard to put into words, the body may step in to express that pain instead. This is called 'somatization,' and it tends to be more common in cultural environments where emotional expression is discouraged, or when someone learned to suppress their feelings during childhood.
The Pain Is Real
The pain and discomfort experienced by those with somatic complaints is genuinely felt. It is a common misconception to think, 'It's a psychological issue, so the pain isn't real.' Having a psychological origin does not make the physical suffering any less real or valid.
A Warm Word from Mindy
Please listen to the signals your body is sending you. Just because tests come back normal doesn't mean you aren't hurting. When your mind is struggling, it's completely natural for your body to struggle alongside it. Mindy is here to help you care for both your body and your mind.
💡 Real-Life Example
A person who develops severe headaches and stomachaches every time an important exam approaches, yet receives no clear diagnosis from their doctor, is a classic example of somatic complaints.
