What Are Solution-Focused Questions?

Solution-Focused Questions are core techniques used in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), designed to focus on solutions, exceptions, and desired futures rather than problems.

Key Types of Solution-Focused Questions

Miracle Question

"If a miracle happened tonight while you were sleeping and all your problems were resolved, what would be the first change you'd notice tomorrow morning?"

This question helps clients vividly imagine the future they want.

Exception Question

"When was there a time, even briefly, when this problem was a little less intense? What was different then?"

By finding moments when the problem was absent, clients discover the problem-solving abilities they already have.

Scaling Question

"If you rated your current situation on a scale of 1 to 10, what number would it be? What would it take to move up just one point?"

This helps clients assess their current state objectively and create a foothold for small change.

Coping Question

"How have you managed to keep going through such a difficult situation?"

This acknowledges and reinforces the client's resilience and strengths.

Mindy's Approach

Mindy uses these kinds of questions when talking with you too. Rather than asking "What went wrong?", asking "What kind of person do you want to become?" is believed to offer far greater empowerment.

Why Are They Effective?

Solution-Focused Questions treat clients as the experts of their own lives. Instead of getting buried in problems, clients are invited to turn their eyes toward possibilities, and by building small successes, they develop self-efficacy. Change doesn't have to be grand — it begins with one very small step.

💡 Real-Life Example

A counselor asking, "Was there any moment this week when you felt even a little better? What were you doing at that time?" is an example of a solution-focused question.
