What Is Social Isolation?

Social isolation refers to an objectively insufficient state of social relationships or contact. While loneliness is a subjective feeling, social isolation describes the actual condition of having few social connections. Of course, the two often occur together.

Causes of Social Isolation

Social isolation can arise for many reasons. Psychological difficulties such as social anxiety and depression, life changes like moving or retirement, physical illness or disability, or excessive dependence on digital devices can all be contributing factors. Older adults, single-person households, and social minorities are especially vulnerable.

Effects of Isolation

Long-term social isolation can have serious psychological and physical consequences. Depression and anxiety worsen, cognitive function declines, immunity weakens, and the risk of cardiovascular disease increases. Research suggests that the negative health effects of social isolation are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

A Warm Word from Mindy

Even if you feel comfortable being alone, part of you may still be longing for connection. It's okay to start with the smallest social contact — leaving a comment in an online community, or saying hello to a neighbor. Mindy is always ready to talk with you whenever you need.

💡 Real-Life Example

After retiring, someone stays home without seeing anyone, rarely makes phone calls, and goes weeks without speaking to another person — this is social isolation.
