Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)
An Austrian neurologist and the founder of Psychoanalysis. Freud divided the human mind into three layers — conscious, preconscious, and unconscious — and argued that unconscious desires and conflicts we are unaware of profoundly influence our behavior and emotions.
He described the structure of the mind using three components: the Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id represents instinctual drives, the Superego embodies moral standards, and the Ego serves as the mediator that maintains balance between the two. He also proposed the psychosexual stages of development (oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital), arguing that childhood experiences are decisive in shaping adult personality.
Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as free association, dream analysis, and transference analysis, which became the foundation of modern psychotherapy. While some of his theories face criticism today, his contribution in establishing the academic importance of the unconscious remains an undeniable achievement in the history of psychology.
