What Is Sexual Orientation?

Sexual orientation refers to the enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction a person feels toward people of a particular gender. It is not something that can be chosen or changed by willpower — it is part of the natural diversity of human experience.

Main Types

Heterosexual: Attraction to people of a different gender

Homosexual: Attraction to people of the same gender

Bisexual: Attraction to people of two or more genders

Pansexual: Attraction regardless of gender

Asexual: Experiencing little or no sexual attraction

Shifts in Psychological Understanding

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, and the World Health Organization (WHO) followed in 1990. Modern psychology recognizes the diversity of sexual orientations as a normal variation of human experience.

Minority Stress

LGBTQ+ individuals may experience minority stress due to social prejudice, discrimination, and internalized homophobia. This is a significant factor that can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Coming Out and Mental Health

Accepting one's sexual orientation and disclosing it (coming out) in a safe environment can have a positive impact on mental well-being. However, this is a deeply personal decision and safety must be ensured. Supportive family, peers, and social environments are essential.
