Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder where a person is unable to speak in certain situations. The ability to speak is there, but anxiety makes it impossible to get words out.

Details

Selective Mutism is a condition where speaking becomes consistently impossible in specific social situations, most commonly at school.

This is not a problem with language ability — it is a problem with anxiety. It is not a matter of 'choosing not to speak' but rather 'being unable to speak.' Intense social anxiety is what blocks the words.

Early intervention is important. Behavioral therapy, gradual exposure, and family support are effective approaches. A key principle is never forcing the person to speak — and Mindy can help you explore what that support might look like.

💡 Real-Life Example

A child who talks freely and easily at home, but cannot say a single word at school.
