What is Screen Time?

Screen time refers to the total amount of time spent using digital screens such as TVs, computers, smartphones, and tablets. The average person today spends 7–10 hours per day in front of screens.

Effects of Screen Time

Physical effects: Digital eye strain (dry eyes, headaches), neck and shoulder pain, increased risk of obesity, and reduced sleep quality (blue light suppresses melatonin) can all occur.

Psychological effects: Research shows that excessive screen time is associated with depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Passive social media use (just scrolling) tends to have the most negative impact.

Children and adolescents: Developing brains can be more significantly affected. Excessive screen time may negatively impact attention, language development, and social skills.

Finding Balance

How you use screens matters more than the amount of time itself. Active, creative use is better than passive consumption, and educational content has more positive effects than purely entertainment-based content.

Recommendations

The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), avoiding screens 1 hour before bed, putting devices down during meals and conversations, and making time for outdoor activities are all helpful strategies for healthy screen time management.
