What is Quality of Life?

Quality of life refers to a person's overall sense of satisfaction and well-being regarding their life. In health psychology, it is viewed as a broad concept that includes not only physical health but also psychological well-being, social relationships, and daily functioning.

Components of Quality of Life

The World Health Organization (WHO) measures quality of life across multiple dimensions: physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, environment, and spirituality/personal beliefs. A deficiency in any one of these areas can affect overall quality of life.

Health and Quality of Life

Chronic illness and mental health challenges can significantly reduce quality of life. Importantly, however, even people with the same condition can experience very different qualities of life depending on their psychological coping strategies and social support. This is precisely what health psychology focuses on.

Ways to Improve Quality of Life

Regular exercise, adequate sleep, meaningful social relationships, and taking time to care for yourself are all important. Cultivating gratitude for the small joys of everyday life is also a wonderful way to enhance your quality of life.

A Word from Mindy

Quality of life doesn't have to be something grand. If your heart felt even a little at ease and warm today, that is already the beginning of a good quality of life.

💡 Real-Life Example

After completing cancer treatment, a person may have physically recovered, but it is important to evaluate quality of life by also including the process of regaining social engagement and emotional stability.
