Punishment

Punishment

Punishment is when a bad consequence follows a behavior, making that behavior less likely to happen again.

Details

Punishment occurs when a negative consequence follows a specific behavior, reducing how often that behavior happens.

However, research shows that punishment only has temporary effects and comes with many side effects — such as fear, aggression, and avoidance. Reinforcement is far more effective for changing behavior.

Especially when raising children, encouraging and praising good behavior is much more effective than using punishment. — Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example

"Breaking a rule and receiving a consequence so you never do it again" — that's punishment.
