Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

A technique where you tense and release each muscle group one by one to achieve overall relaxation throughout your body.

Details

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a relaxation technique developed by Edmund Jacobson, in which each muscle group is systematically tensed and then released. The process moves sequentially from the feet up to the head, or in reverse order.

By consciously noticing the contrast between tension and relaxation in each muscle, you develop a greater awareness of your body's state of tension. It is effective for anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, headaches, and more.

At first, it helps to follow along with a guided recording, but with practice, Mindy finds that most people are able to do it on their own.

💡 Real-Life Example

Just like clenching your fist tightly and then releasing it makes your hand feel relaxed, this method involves tensing and releasing the muscles throughout your entire body in sequence.
