Positive Symptoms

Positive Symptoms

Symptoms where experiences that normally don't exist are added, such as hallucinations and delusions. They respond relatively well to medication.

Details

Positive symptoms are those that are "added" to normal experience, most commonly seen in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The term "positive" doesn't mean good — it means something has been added that shouldn't be there.

  • Perceptual disturbances: Experiencing stimuli that don't actually exist, such as auditory or visual hallucinations
  • Thought content disturbances: Firm beliefs that differ from reality, such as persecutory, grandiose, or referential delusions
  • Thought process disturbances: When the flow of thoughts becomes illogical or disorganized, making communication difficult
  • A word from Mindy: Positive symptoms are more noticeable, which often leads to quicker diagnosis. They respond well to antipsychotic medication, so consistent treatment is important.

    💡 Real-Life Example

Hearing voices that don't exist, being convinced someone is following you, or experiencing thoughts that become very confused and jumbled.
