Peer Relationships

Peer Relationships

Social relationships formed with friends of similar age, which are critically important for development during childhood and adolescence.

Details

Peer relationships are connections that have a profound influence on social development, self-concept, and emotional growth during childhood and adolescence. Through interactions with peers, children and teens learn cooperation, conflict resolution, empathy, and communication skills.

Healthy peer relationships boost self-esteem and provide emotional security, while peer rejection or bullying can lead to serious psychological difficulties. Every child has their own way of connecting with others, so having a large number of friends is not necessarily what matters most. Even one meaningful relationship can make a tremendous difference.
