Details

Paul Ekman (1934–)

An American psychologist and world-leading authority on emotions and facial expressions. He scientifically proved that human emotional expressions are universal, transcending culture and ethnicity.

Key Contributions

Basic Emotions Theory

Ekman studied diverse cultures around the world and identified 6 basic emotions that exist universally:

  • Happiness
  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Surprise
  • Disgust
  • He later added Contempt, expanding the list to 7. He showed that these emotions are expressed with identical facial expressions regardless of cultural learning.

    Facial Action Coding System (FACS)

Ekman, together with Wallace Friesen, developed the FACS (Facial Action Coding System). It classifies facial muscle movements into 43 individual units (Action Units, AUs), creating a framework for objectively measuring and analyzing facial expressions.

    Micro-expressions

Ekman discovered micro-expressions — fleeting expressions that appear and disappear in 0.04 to 0.2 seconds. These are moments when a person's true, concealed emotion briefly flashes across the face, and they are used in lie detection research.

    Influence on Popular Culture

Ekman's research inspired the TV drama *Lie to Me* and the animated film *Inside Out*.

    From Mindy's Perspective

Like Ekman's research, Mindy finds comfort in the fact that emotions are universal to all human beings. The feelings you experience are natural feelings that anyone in the world can share. Every emotion is worth expressing and sharing.

    💡 Real-Life Example

When people from two countries with completely different languages smile in the same way when they are happy, it is a perfect example of the universality of emotions that Ekman demonstrated.
