Nudge

Nudge

A nudge is a gentle intervention that steers behavior in a particular direction through environmental design, without restricting freedom of choice.

Details

Nudge is a concept introduced by behavioral economist Richard Thaler and legal scholar Cass Sunstein — the word means 'to give someone a gentle push with your elbow.'

The Basic Principle of Nudging

A nudge guides people toward better choices without forcing them. By designing a 'choice architecture,' it makes certain options feel like the natural thing to do.

Examples of Positive Nudges

  • Organ donation consent: Switching to an opt-out system (automatic consent unless you decline) significantly increased donation rates
  • Piano staircase: Painting piano keys on stairs led more people to use the stairs instead of the escalator
  • Savings programs: Automatically directing a portion of each raise into savings raised overall savings rates
  • Dark Nudges: When Nudging Is Misused

When nudges are used to serve the interests of a company or manipulator rather than the user, they are called dark nudges or sludge.

    Examples of Dark Patterns

  • Canceling a subscription is made intentionally complicated
  • Consent to share personal data is pre-checked by default
  • 'Other customers also bought this item' exploits the psychology of social conformity
  • Free trials automatically convert to paid subscriptions
  • Dark Nudges in Personal Relationships

  • Repeating questions designed to lead toward a specific conclusion
  • Limiting options to extract the desired answer
  • Shaping the environment so the other person 'voluntarily' does what you want
  • How to Respond to Dark Nudges

  • Ask yourself: 'Why is this option set as the default?'
  • When an environment pressures you to decide quickly, take a step back
  • Don't leave default settings untouched — review them yourself
  • Once you recognize nudges, you can make choices on your own terms rather than being manipulated. If you'd like to talk through a situation where you felt nudged or pressured, I'm here — I'm Mindy.

    💡 Real-Life Example

'Making the cancel subscription button hard to find while making the 'keep subscription' button large and prominent' — this is a classic example of a dark nudge.
