Negative Symptoms

Negative Symptoms

Negative symptoms involve a reduction in normal functioning. They include decreased emotional expression and loss of motivation, and they can take longer to recover from.

Details

Negative symptoms are characterized by things that are 'missing' from normal functioning, including reduced emotional expression, motivation, and social engagement. They may be less obvious than positive symptoms, but their impact on daily life can actually be greater.

  • Flat Affect: A significant reduction in emotional expression through facial expressions or tone of voice
  • Avolition: Difficulty initiating or sustaining goal-directed activities
  • Social Withdrawal: A strong tendency to avoid interaction with others and prefer being alone
  • Mindy's Note: Negative symptoms are often misunderstood as laziness or a lack of willpower, but they are caused by changes in the brain. Try taking small steps at your own pace, and please don't be too hard on yourself.

    💡 Real-Life Example

An example would be losing all interest in activities you previously enjoyed, noticing your facial expressions becoming flat, and finding yourself avoiding spending time with other people.
