Microaggression

Microaggression

Subtle words or actions that send rude or discriminatory messages to minority group members, even when unintentional. Small on their own, but when repeated, they can cause deep psychological harm.

Details

What Is a Microaggression?

A microaggression is a subtle, indirect discriminatory comment or behavior directed at members of minority groups in everyday life. They are usually unintentional, and the person responsible often doesn't realize they are sending a discriminatory message. The concept was systematized by Columbia University professor Derald Wing Sue.

Three Types

Microinsult: A comment that hides bias within a compliment — for example, 'You're really good at math for a woman.'

Microinvalidation: Denying someone's experience of discrimination — for example, 'Discrimination doesn't really happen anymore.'

Microassault: Deliberate but subtle discriminatory acts, such as jokes targeting a specific group.

Why Does 'Micro' Still Matter?

Each instance may seem small, but when they accumulate daily and repeatedly, they have serious psychological consequences. Research links the buildup of microaggressions to depression, anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and job burnout. They can be compared to 'a thousand paper cuts' — one cut is manageable, but hundreds leave a deep wound.

What We Can Do

Start by reflecting on your own unconscious biases, and when someone expresses discomfort, listen without becoming defensive. When you make a mistake, a sincere apology and a genuine willingness to learn make all the difference. If you'd like to explore how microaggressions may have affected you personally, Mindy is here to talk it through with you.

💡 Real-Life Example

Telling a young person from a multicultural family who was born and raised in Korea, 'Your Korean is so good!' It sounds like a compliment, but it carries the message: 'You are not really Korean.'
