Details

What Is Main Character Syndrome?

Main Character Syndrome is the tendency to view oneself as the central protagonist in the narrative of life, imagining that events and people exist to serve one's own story. Popularized on TikTok around 2021, the term captures both a playful self-awareness and a potentially problematic hyper-self-focus.

The Two Sides

On the healthy side, seeing yourself as the hero of your own story can boost resilience and motivation — 'this hardship is just my character arc.' On the problematic side, it can reduce empathy, cause you to misinterpret others' actions as being about you, and make real relationships feel like sets and props.

Finding Balance

Remember that every person you meet is also the protagonist of their own story. Practice genuine curiosity about others' inner lives. Use the hero narrative to fuel persistence, but stay open to seeing the world through others' eyes too.

Mindy says: "You are absolutely the hero of your story. And so is every person you'll meet today. When your stories intertwine with real curiosity, that's where the magic happens."

💡 Real-Life Example

When someone in the cafe laughed, her first thought was, 'Are they laughing at me?' — even though they were across the room on a phone call.
