Interdependence

Interdependence is a way of relating where you healthily rely on others while still respecting each person's independence. It's the mature form of connection where you're okay on your own, but life becomes richer when you're together.

What Is Interdependence?

Interdependence is a way of relating in which two people maintain their individual independence and autonomy while also healthily leaning on and supporting each other. It's considered neither dependence nor independence, but rather the most mature form a relationship can take.

The Difference Between Dependence, Independence, and Interdependence

Understanding the stages of relational development makes interdependence clearer:

  • Dependence: 'I can't live without you.' — A state of leaning too heavily on another person
  • Independence: 'I'm perfectly fine on my own.' — A state of refusing help from others
  • Interdependence: 'I'm okay alone, but better together.' — A healthy, balanced state
  • Characteristics of an Interdependent Relationship

In an interdependent relationship, you'll notice:

  • Mutual respect for each other's personal space and time
  • The ability to ask for help naturally when things get hard
  • Genuinely cheering on and supporting each other's growth
  • A commitment to resolving conflict through conversation rather than avoidance
  • Maintaining your own sense of identity within the relationship
  • Building Interdependence with Mindy

Mindy believes that a healthy relationship is one where two whole people come together as themselves. To cultivate interdependence, it helps to first build a solid relationship with yourself.

Practicing honest expression of your feelings and needs, learning to respect your partner's 'no,' and allowing yourself to enjoy alone time without guilt — all of these are steps toward interdependence. True intimacy blooms where two complete circles overlap.

    💡 Real-Life Example

A couple who respects each other's individual hobbies, still chooses to spend weekends together, and openly shares their struggles with one another — that's what an interdependent relationship looks like.
