Information Fatigue

Information Fatigue

Information fatigue is a state where exposure to excessive amounts of information clouds your judgment and leaves you mentally exhausted.

Details

Information fatigue is a phenomenon where being overwhelmed by an excessive volume of information leads to impaired decision-making ability and psychological burnout.

What is Information Fatigue?

Let's explore this together with Mindy. Every day, we encounter enormous amounts of information through news, messages, emails, social media, and more. The brain has a limit to how much information it can process, and when that limit is exceeded, information fatigue sets in. This concept was first named 'Information Fatigue Syndrome' in the 1990s by David Lewis.

Key Symptoms

  • Decision Paralysis: Too many options make it impossible to decide on anything
  • Difficulty Concentrating: It becomes hard to focus on one thing for an extended period
  • Chronic Mental Exhaustion: Even after adequate rest, a sense of mental tiredness persists
  • Information Avoidance: Simply taking in new information becomes a source of stress
  • Increased Anxiety: Worry about missing out on important information
  • The Vicious Cycle of Information Fatigue

For fear of missing something, you seek out more information; the more you consume, the more exhausted you become; and when exhaustion impairs your judgment, you find yourself searching for even more information. This cycle can easily lead to anxiety, sleep disturbances, and burnout.

    A Warm Word from Mindy

It's okay to let go of the pressure to know everything. Being selective about which information you truly need is itself an important skill. How about turning off your notifications for a little while today and giving yourself some quiet time?

    💡 Real-Life Example

"I spent the whole day checking multiple news apps, YouTube, and chat notifications, and in the end I couldn't focus on the work that actually mattered."
