What Is Implicit Bias?

Implicit bias refers to automatic attitudes or stereotypes that operate without our conscious awareness. Unlike explicit bias, people often don't even realize they hold these prejudices.

How Does It Form?

Implicit bias develops naturally over a long period of time:

  • Cultural exposure: Images and messages repeatedly encountered through media, education, and social environments
  • Accumulated experience: Personal experiences become unconsciously patterned
  • Social learning: Naturally absorbing the attitudes and behaviors of those around us
  • Impact on Everyday Life

Implicit bias can appear in a variety of situations:

  • Making unconsciously different evaluations of résumés based solely on the applicant's name
  • Judging someone's personality based only on their appearance at a first meeting
  • Automatically associating a specific gender with certain professions
  • Reducing Bias

While it's difficult to eliminate implicit bias entirely, awareness is the beginning of change:

  • Observe and notice your own automatic reactions
  • Engage with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Pause and reflect before making decisions
  • Consciously seek out examples that challenge stereotypes
  • A Word from Mindy

Having implicit bias doesn't mean you're a bad person. It's a natural phenomenon that anyone raised in society can experience. What matters is recognizing it and making the effort to judge others more fairly.

    💡 Real-Life Example

An interviewer consciously believes they are evaluating candidates fairly, but unconsciously feels more favorably toward applicants who share a similar background to their own — this is an example of implicit bias.
