Heuristics

Heuristics

Heuristics are mental shortcuts we use to make quick judgments about complex problems. They're not perfect, but they work efficiently in most situations as an intuitive way of thinking.

What Are Heuristics?

Heuristics are mental shortcuts used to simplify complex judgments or decision-making. They were systematically studied by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky.

Major Types of Heuristics

  • Availability Heuristic: We judge probability based on examples that come to mind easily. For instance, feeling that flying is dangerous right after seeing news about a plane crash.
  • Representativeness Heuristic: We judge things based on how similar they are to the typical characteristics of a certain category. For example, assuming someone who wears glasses must be a good student.
  • Anchoring Heuristic: Our later judgments are influenced by the first piece of information we encounter. For example, seeing the original price before a discount makes the sale price feel like a better deal.
  • Strengths and Limitations

Heuristics serve as efficient judgment tools for us when we can't analyze every piece of information at every moment. However, they can sometimes lead to systematic errors (cognitive biases).

    Application in Mental Health

Mindy believes that recognizing the heuristics you use is the beginning of wiser decision-making. When anxiety or worry feels overwhelming, ask yourself whether the availability heuristic might be at work, causing you to overestimate danger. Developing the habit of stepping back and reflecting can help bring balance to your mind.

    💡 Real-Life Example

When choosing a restaurant, picking the 'most popular dish' without carefully comparing the entire menu is an example of using a heuristic — following the choices of the majority.
