Health Belief Model

Health Belief Model

A psychological model that explains why people do or don't take health-related actions. It suggests that behavior depends on how people perceive the risks of illness and the benefits of taking action.

Details

The Health Belief Model is a foundational theory in health psychology developed in the 1950s, explaining why people engage in — or avoid — certain health behaviors.

Core Components

  • Perceived Susceptibility: "I could actually get this disease" — how likely a person feels they are to develop an illness
  • Perceived Severity: "Getting this disease would be really serious" — how serious a person believes the consequences of the illness would be
  • Perceived Benefits: "Taking this action will actually help" — belief in the effectiveness of preventive behavior
  • Perceived Barriers: "But I don't have time, and it's too expensive" — factors that get in the way of taking action
  • Cues to Action: Triggers that prompt health behavior (news, symptoms, advice from others, etc.)
  • Self-Efficacy: "I can actually do this" — confidence in one's ability to carry out the behavior
  • Applications

This model is used in smoking cessation programs, improving health screening participation, building exercise habits, and many other health promotion campaigns. Because each person's health beliefs differ, understanding and adjusting those beliefs is the key to behavior change.

    💡 Real-Life Example

When deciding whether to get a flu shot, you go through a process of weighing questions like "Would getting the flu actually be dangerous for me?" and "Would the vaccine really make a difference?"
