Harry Harlow (1905–1981)

Harlow was an American comparative psychologist renowned for his experimental research on attachment and the nature of love. His work fundamentally transformed our understanding of child development and caregiving.

Surrogate Mother Experiment

This is Harlow's most famous experiment. Infant monkeys were given two types of surrogate mothers:

The infant monkeys went to the wire mother only when hungry, spending most of their time clinging to the cloth mother. Even in frightening situations, they ran to the cloth mother. This experiment proved that emotional security and physical contact are far more important than simple food provision.

Behaviorist psychology at the time viewed attachment as simply a conditioned response to feeding. Harlow overturned this view, demonstrating that the core of attachment lies in warm contact and emotional security.
