What is Gender Identity?
Gender identity is a deep, inner sense of oneself as a man, woman, or another gender. It is a concept separate from biological sex assigned at birth, and is based on each person's subjective experience.
The Diversity of Gender Identity
Gender identity exists on a broad spectrum that goes beyond the binary of male and female. There are many gender identities — including transgender, non-binary, and genderfluid — each of which is a unique experience deserving of respect. Awareness of one's gender identity can begin in childhood and continues to develop throughout life.
Connection to Mental Health
Gender identity itself is not a mental health issue. However, when one's gender identity is not accepted by society, a person may experience minority stress, discrimination, and harassment, which can lead to mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and risk of self-harm. A supportive and accepting environment is critically important.
A Warm Word from Mindy

💡 Real-Life Example
A person assigned male at birth who inwardly experiences themselves as a woman exploring and expressing their gender identity is a completely natural process.
