What is Figure-Ground Perception?
Figure-ground perception is the perceptual ability to distinguish a main object (figure) from its surrounding environment (ground) within visual information. It is one of the core principles of Gestalt psychology, revealing how our mind organizes and makes sense of the world.
How Does It Work?
When our brain receives visual information, it automatically judges 'what is important,' bringing that element forward as the figure while pushing everything else back as the ground. For example, when you focus on a friend's face in a café, your friend becomes the figure and the café interior becomes the background.
The Famous Optical Illusion
A classic demonstration of this principle is the Rubin's Vase illusion. Looking at the same image, you might see a vase one moment and two faces looking at each other the next. What you perceive depends entirely on which element you choose as the figure.
