What Is an Existential Crisis?
An existential crisis refers to a profound psychological disturbance and anxiety that arises when a person confronts the fundamental questions of human existence — including the meaning of life, purpose, freedom, responsibility, isolation, and death. It is a central theme in existentialist philosophy and psychology.
Triggers of an Existential Crisis
Loss: The death of a loved one, a breakup, job loss, and similar experiences
Life transitions: Graduation, retirement, midlife, old age, and other major life-stage shifts
Trauma: Shocking experiences such as accidents, illness, or natural disasters
Post-achievement emptiness: The hollow feeling of 'So what now?' after reaching a long-sought goal
Yalom's Four Ultimate Concerns
Irvin Yalom identified four ultimate concerns that every human being must face:
1. Death: The awareness of one's own mortality and the finite nature of existence
2. Freedom: The weight of having the freedom to choose — and the responsibility that comes with it
3. Isolation: The existential loneliness of being fundamentally alone
4. Meaninglessness: The challenge of finding meaning in a world that offers none by default
Turning Crisis into Growth
Although an existential crisis is painful, it can become a turning point that leads to a deeper, more intentional way of living. Frankl's Logotherapy, Yalom's Existential Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are among the leading approaches for working through existential crises. With the support of a counselor like Mindy, a crisis can become an opportunity to discover what truly matters to you.
💡 Real-Life Example
After a serious illness or the loss of someone dear, a person becomes consumed by fundamental questions like 'What is life, really? Why should I go on?' — unable to shake the feeling that nothing makes sense anymore.
