Overview
Hi, I'm Mindy. Today, let's talk about a somewhat unfamiliar concept called Erotomania.
Erotomania is a delusional belief in which a person is convinced that another individual is deeply in love with them. Even when there is little or no actual interaction with that person, the individual interprets ordinary events as secret messages of love being sent to them.
Key Concepts
Erotomania is also called De Clérambault's Syndrome, named after the French psychiatrist De Clérambault. In the DSM-5, it is classified as a subtype of Delusional Disorder.
A defining feature of this delusion is that even the other person's indifference or rejection is reinterpreted as a "test of love" or "an act to keep their feelings secret." Even when clearly rejected, the person remains convinced that "their true feelings are different," and may believe they have found hidden messages meant for them in TV broadcasts or social media posts.
Erotomania can appear in the context of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or delusional disorder, and is reported to be more common in women. In severe cases, it can lead to stalking or legal issues, making professional intervention essential.
