Developmental Trauma

Developmental Trauma

Trauma experienced in childhood, especially during early developmental stages, that has wide-ranging effects on overall development.

Details

Developmental Trauma is a concept proposed by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, describing how chronic trauma experienced during early development affects overall development including brain development, attachment, and self-regulation.

Causes can include abuse, neglect, and family instability. A standard PTSD diagnosis often fails to fully capture the difficulties these children face.

Safe relational experiences, sensory-based therapies, and play therapy have been shown to be effective. With the right support, wounds from childhood can heal. Mindy is here to walk alongside you on that journey.

💡 Real-Life Example

A child who experienced neglect or abuse during infancy and toddlerhood may show widespread effects on their emotional, cognitive, and relational development in the years that follow.
