Delusion

Delusion

A delusion is a strong, unshakeable belief that doesn't match reality. It's characterized by the fact that it doesn't easily change even when others try to reason with the person.

Details

A delusion is a false belief that is firmly maintained despite having no basis in reality. What sets it apart from ordinary misunderstandings is that the belief doesn't change even when faced with logical counterarguments or evidence.

  • Persecutory delusion: The belief that someone is watching or trying to harm you — this is the most common type
  • Grandiose delusion: The belief that one possesses special abilities, powers, or status
  • Referential delusion: Interpreting unrelated events or other people's actions as having personal significance directed at oneself
  • A word from Mindy: Because delusions feel very real to the person experiencing them, simply telling someone they are 'wrong' isn't helpful. It's important to work through these experiences safely with a professional.

    💡 Real-Life Example

Examples include being convinced that people around you are trying to harm you despite having no evidence, or firmly believing that you have been given a special mission or purpose.
