Cultural Competence
Cultural Competence
The ability to understand, communicate with, and support people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
Details
Cultural competence brings together knowledge, attitudes, and skills that help us connect with people whose cultural backgrounds differ from our own. It involves three layers: becoming aware of your own cultural assumptions and blind spots, building genuine knowledge about different worldviews and communication styles, and developing the practical skills to apply that understanding in real situations. In mental health support especially, overlooking someone's cultural context can make care far less effective or even unintentionally harmful. It is not a destination you reach once but an ongoing, lifelong practice rooted in curiosity and humility.
💡 Real-Life Example
A therapist working with a client from a collectivist cultural background takes time to understand how that culture views family roles and decision-making, then shapes their approach accordingly rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method.
