Cult Psychology
Cult Psychology
The study of how high-control groups use psychological tactics to manipulate and dominate their members.
Details
Cult psychology explores how certain groups, built around a charismatic leader, gain extreme control over what members think, feel, and do. These groups are not limited to religion — self-help organizations, political movements, and even online communities can show cult-like patterns. Psychologist Steven Hassan identified four key control methods: behavior, information, thought, and emotional control, together known as the BITE model. Understanding these patterns helps people recognize warning signs and support those who may be caught in harmful group dynamics.
💡 Real-Life Example
At first the group felt like a warm, welcoming community, but over time members were gradually encouraged to cut ties with family and friends and to trust only the leader's word — a classic pattern of cult-style manipulation.
