crystallized intelligence
Crystallized Intelligence
The ability to use knowledge and skills built up through years of learning and experience — and it actually grows stronger as you get older.
Details
Crystallized intelligence refers to the mental ability that draws on everything you have learned, experienced, and absorbed over your lifetime — things like vocabulary, general knowledge, and the kind of judgment that only comes with time. Psychologist Raymond Cattell introduced this idea to distinguish it from fluid intelligence, which is about solving brand-new problems on the fly. While fluid intelligence tends to peak in early adulthood, crystallized intelligence can keep growing well into your 60s and 70s. It is essentially the foundation of what we call wisdom.
💡 Real-Life Example
A seasoned doctor who can quickly narrow down a diagnosis just from hearing a patient describe their symptoms is drawing on decades of crystallized intelligence.
