Critical Incident Stress

Critical Incident Stress

The intense stress response that follows experiencing or witnessing a shocking event like a disaster, accident, or violent incident.

Details

Critical incident stress refers to the powerful psychological, emotional, and physical reactions that can follow exposure to an overwhelming, out-of-the-ordinary event. Things like major accidents, natural disasters, acts of violence, or the sudden loss of a colleague can all trigger this kind of response. Common reactions include intrusive memories, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, emotional numbness, and feeling on edge. These responses are a normal reaction to an abnormal situation, and with the right support, most people gradually find their footing again.

💡 Real-Life Example

After helping to contain a large warehouse fire, a firefighter spent several days unable to shake the images from the scene, but through a peer support group and a few counseling sessions, they slowly began to feel like themselves again.
