Coping with Shame

Coping with shame means working through the painful feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with who you are, and rediscovering your own worth.

Details

Shame is different from guilt in an important way. Guilt says you did something bad, while shame says you are bad as a person. That distinction matters because shame strikes at your whole sense of self, making it one of the most painful emotions to carry. Learning to cope with shame involves recognizing when it shows up, being gentle with yourself, and gradually loosening its grip so it no longer defines how you see yourself.

💡 Real-Life Example

A memory of being deeply embarrassed in front of classmates as a child still surfaces decades later, making it hard to walk into new social situations without dreading judgment.
