confirmation bias

Confirmation Bias

The habit of noticing what supports what you already believe and overlooking what does not.

Details

Confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that fits what we already believe, while ignoring or downplaying information that challenges it. This can happen in everyday life, relationships, politics, health worries, and self-esteem. If someone already believes “People do not like me,” they may remember every cold look and miss signs of warmth or care. Everyone has this bias to some degree, which is why slowing down and looking for disconfirming evidence can be so helpful.

💡 Real-Life Example

A person believes they are unlikeable, so they remember one awkward moment all day and brush past three kind interactions.
