compassion-focused therapy (CFT)

Compassion-Focused Therapy

A therapy that helps people respond to themselves with more warmth, especially when shame or self-criticism runs deep.

Details

Compassion-focused therapy, often called CFT, helps people who struggle with harsh self-judgment, shame, or chronic self-criticism learn a kinder inner voice. It explores how threat, drive, and soothing systems work in the mind and body, then builds skills that increase emotional safety and self-compassion. The goal is not to avoid responsibility. It is to help someone face pain without attacking themselves at the same time.

💡 Real-Life Example

A person who automatically says “I am a failure” after every mistake may use CFT to practice a gentler and more balanced way of speaking to themselves.
