compassion fatigue

Compassion Fatigue

Emotional exhaustion that can happen when you spend a long time caring about other people’s pain.

Details

Compassion fatigue is the weariness that can build up when someone is repeatedly exposed to other people’s suffering. It is common in caregivers, therapists, healthcare workers, teachers, and family members supporting a loved one. A person may feel drained, numb, irritable, or guilty for not having the same emotional energy they once had. It does not mean they stopped caring. It often means they have been carrying too much for too long without enough rest or support.

💡 Real-Life Example

A nurse who deeply cares about patients may begin to feel emotionally flat, exhausted, and unable to recover even after time off.
