Collectivism vs Individualism
Two broad cultural ways of emphasizing either “we” or “I” in identity, choices, and relationships.
Details
Collectivism and individualism describe two broad ways that cultures shape how people think about themselves and others. Collectivist settings often place more value on group harmony, shared responsibility, and belonging. Individualist settings often place more value on personal autonomy, self-expression, and individual choice. Neither is simply better. Each comes with strengths and tensions, and many people live somewhere in between depending on family, culture, and context.
💡 Real-Life Example
One person may be taught to ask “What is best for the family?” while another is taught to ask “What feels right for me?” Both reflect different cultural emphases.
