Cognitive Restructuring

A way of catching harsh thoughts and replacing them with more balanced, realistic ones.

Details

Cognitive restructuring is a core CBT skill that helps people notice negative or distorted thoughts and look at them more carefully. Instead of automatically believing thoughts like “I always fail” or “Everything is ruined,” a person learns to pause, check the evidence, and try a fairer alternative. The goal is not fake positivity. It is to reduce the power of thoughts that hurt and trap you, and make room for something more grounded and true.

💡 Real-Life Example

A person notices the thought “I am useless,” then reframes it as “I am having a hard time, but that does not define my whole worth.”
