cognitive reserve
Cognitive Reserve
The brain’s built-up ability to stay steadier even with aging or brain changes.
Details
Cognitive reserve is the brain’s “extra flexibility” that builds up over time through learning, reading, social connection, physical activity, and mentally stimulating experiences. It can help a person keep thinking, remembering, and functioning better for longer even when aging or brain-related changes happen. It does not mean the brain is protected from everything. It means the brain may have more ways to adapt and keep going.
💡 Real-Life Example
Two older adults may show similar brain changes, but the one with higher cognitive reserve may stay independent and mentally sharp for longer.
