Cognitive Appraisal
The way we interpret a situation and decide what it means for us.
Details
Cognitive appraisal is the meaning-making process that happens when we size up a situation. The event itself matters, but our emotional reaction is also shaped by how we interpret it. The same challenge can feel exciting, threatening, unfair, or manageable depending on the meaning we give it. This is why changing perspective can sometimes change emotion too.
💡 Real-Life Example
One person sees a big presentation as a chance to grow, while another sees it as proof they might fail and feels intense anxiety.
