code-switching

Code-Switching

Changing language, tone, or behavior depending on the social setting or who you are with.

Details

Code-switching is the way people adjust how they speak, act, or present themselves depending on the situation, the group they are with, or the culture around them. It can include switching languages, changing tone, using different manners, or downplaying parts of identity to fit in. Sometimes it is a strength and a flexible social skill. Sometimes it is exhausting, especially when a person feels they cannot safely be fully themselves.

💡 Real-Life Example

A bilingual worker speaks one way at the office, another way with family, and notices how much energy that constant shifting can take.
