Understanding the Mind
change blindness
Change Blindness
A perception effect where people miss an obvious change right in front of them, especially when their attention is elsewhere.
Details
Change blindness happens when a noticeable change in a visual scene goes unnoticed. Even when we think we are taking everything in, our attention is actually limited. If our focus is on one part of a scene, we can completely miss a change in another part, even if it is fairly big. This reminds us that seeing is not the same as fully noticing.
💡 Real-Life Example
A friend gets a noticeable haircut, but you keep talking for several minutes before realizing anything looks different.
