Body Memory (Somatic Memory)

Body Memory (Somatic Memory)

Body memory is the phenomenon where traumatic experiences are stored in the body and manifest as physical sensations in certain situations.

Details

Body memory is the concept that traumatic experiences are stored not only as cognitive memories but also as bodily sensations. This is well explained in Bessel van der Kolk's "The Body Keeps the Score." Certain postures, touches, or smells can trigger the physical responses from the time of the trauma. This is why body-based approaches (yoga, bodywork, somatic experiencing) are so important in trauma therapy. The body and mind are connected, and regaining a sense of safety in the body is a vital part of trauma recovery. Mindy understands that healing involves your whole being — body and mind together.

💡 Real-Life Example

An area where you were once injured hurting again when trauma is recalled, or feeling anxiety in a certain posture — these are examples of body memory.
