Blame shifting

Blame Shifting

When someone avoids owning their behavior by putting the fault on someone else.

Details

Blame shifting happens when a person refuses to take responsibility for what they did and instead turns the blame onto someone else. It can sound like, 'I only reacted that way because of you' or 'This is your fault, not mine.' Over time, this pattern can leave the other person feeling confused, guilty, and constantly second-guessing themselves. Taking responsibility is hard, but healthy relationships need honesty instead of blame being passed around.

💡 Real-Life Example

Someone shows up late, then says, 'If you had reminded me, this wouldn't have happened,' and makes the other person feel at fault.
