Biopsychosocial model

Biopsychosocial Model

A way of understanding health by looking at the body, the mind, and life circumstances together.

Details

The biopsychosocial model explains that health and illness are rarely caused by just one thing. Biological factors like genes or hormones matter, but so do psychological factors like stress, beliefs, and coping style, along with social factors like relationships, money, work, and culture.

This model reminds us that people are not just bodies with symptoms. The same illness can affect two people very differently depending on what they are carrying emotionally and socially.

It is a helpful way to think about mental and physical health with more depth and more compassion. It asks us to look at the whole person, not just one part.

💡 Real-Life Example

A doctor treating chronic pain also asks about stress, sleep, family support, and work conditions instead of focusing only on the body.
