Anna Freud (1895–1982)
Anna Freud was an Austrian-born British psychoanalyst who made foundational contributions to child psychoanalysis and ego psychology. The youngest daughter of Sigmund Freud, she both inherited and extended her father's psychoanalytic framework, opening new territory he had not explored.
Major Contributions
Systematizing Ego Defense Mechanisms
In her 1936 book *The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence*, Anna Freud catalogued and clarified the ego's protective strategies — including repression, projection, rationalization, sublimation, and regression. This work became a cornerstone of ego psychology and remains clinically influential today.
Child Psychoanalysis
Recognizing that children cannot engage in free association the way adults can, Anna Freud developed child-friendly techniques: play observation, drawing analysis, and longitudinal developmental observation. Her approach shifted the field's focus from retroactive adult analysis toward understanding children in real time.
Wartime Child Care Research
During World War II, she co-directed the Hampstead War Nurseries in London, caring for children separated from their parents by bombing and evacuation. Her observations on early attachment, separation, and deprivation significantly influenced John Bowlby's development of attachment theory.
Mindy's note: Anna Freud taught us that understanding the ways our minds protect themselves is the first step toward genuine self-knowledge. Noticing your own defensive patterns — with curiosity rather than judgment — is part of that same journey.
💡 Real-Life Example
Unconsciously suppressing difficult emotions or attributing one's own frustration to others are classic examples of the ego defense mechanisms Anna Freud described.
