Ageism

Ageism

Ageism is prejudice or discrimination against people based on their age, most commonly against older adults, but also affecting younger people who are dismissed as inexperienced.

Details

What Is Ageism?

Ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudice, and discriminatory behavior directed at individuals or groups based solely on their age. It operates in both directions — older adults are often seen as incompetent or burdensome, while younger people may be dismissed as immature or untrustworthy.

Types of Ageism

Against older adults: Viewing elderly people as incapable of learning new skills or contributing meaningfully to society.

Against younger people: Dismissing young adults as inexperienced or irresponsible regardless of their actual abilities.

Institutional ageism: Age-based disadvantages in hiring, promotions, healthcare access, or legal systems.

Internalized ageism: When individuals absorb negative beliefs about their own age group and begin to limit themselves accordingly.

Psychological Effects

Experiencing ageism is linked to lower self-esteem, increased depression, and social isolation. Internalized ageism can cause people to set artificially low expectations for themselves, negatively affecting both mental and physical health.

Overcoming Ageism

Increasing intergenerational contact, challenging age-based stereotypes, and recognizing the diverse strengths present at every life stage are key steps toward reducing ageism at both personal and societal levels.

Mindy's Warm Note

At every age, growth, learning, and a meaningful life are possible. Age is a number — it does not determine your worth or your potential.

💡 Real-Life Example

A highly qualified 50-year-old job applicant is asked during an interview, 'Can you really learn new technology at your age?' — a textbook example of ageist bias.
